Amoghasiddhi Buddha
13th century
Western or central Tibet
Painted brass, gold plated, silver inlay
W: 31.6 x H: 42.2 x D: 14.0 cm

Devotees pray to Amoghasiddhi Buddha to help them overcome jealousy and greed and transform them into wisdom. He is one of five Buddhas, crowned and adorned with jewels. Amoghasiddhi Buddha is thought to occupy the five northern directions, relating to the elements of greenery, wind and air. His raised right hand signifies "do not be afraid."
The sculpture is probably one of a group of elegant bronzes from western Tibet, and shows links to the highly skilled craftsmanship of Indian sculpture from the Pala period (700s-1100s). The eyes are inlaid with silver, and there are traces of red pigment in the necklace, crown and hair ornament.
